Sukuh Temple has a Hindu background and is estimated to have been built at the end of the 15th century AD In contrast to the general Hindu temples in Central Java, Sukuh Temple’s architecture is deemed to deviate from the provisions in the Hindu holy building, Wastu Widya. According to the provisions, a temple must have a square foundation with the holiest place in the middle.

The existence of these deviations allegedly because Sukuh Temple was built during the waning influence of Hinduism in Java. The waning influence of Hinduism on Java apparently revived local cultural elements from the Megalithic era. The influence of prehistoric times can be seen from the shape of Sukuh Temple building which is a terraced terrace. Such form is similar to the punden staircase building which is a characteristic of the sacred buildings in pre-Hindu times. Another hallmark of pre-Hindu sacred buildings is that the holiest places are located at the highest and rear.

According to the allegations of experts, Sukuh Temple was built for the purpose of observing, namely counteracting or releasing bad forces that affect a person’s life due to certain characteristics they have. The allegations are based on reliefs containing stories of conserving, such as Sudamala and Garudheya, and on the statues of tortoises and garuda found in Sukuh Temple.(aka)
